Biblioteca Teste Fiorite

"TESTE FIORITE" Library, the Community Library in Brindisi.

In order to safely walk children through the challenges of growing up, it is important to consider what makes them feel secure, capable, autonomous and ready to face new experiences. Teste Fiorite Library ticks all the boxes. It is set in Brindisi, and it was born as a part of the project “Community Library” by the Apulia Region. Teste Fiorite Library is an example of an advanced type of libraries designed for a specific age group (4-13 years). It is enriched by modular and ergonomic furnishings and belongs to a new generation of libraries, which are not only a repositories of book collections but also a place of experience.

The Teste Fiorite Library in Brindisi offers all participants and visitors multimedia options, workshops, storytelling and storyboarding activities. The library spreads culture with new methods, facilitating contact and fluidity by encouraging exchange and breaking down internal boundaries. It’s a social bond that flows between essence and traditions. The library fully reflects the idea of “living together,” interconnecting people in society, and transmitting knowledge and values. The goals of the Teste Fiorite Library in Brindisi are to promote and inspire critical and compassionate thinking, developing resistance to discrimination, indoctrination, and prejudice; to promote active participation by enhancing essential skills and personal potential through new forms of learning and relationships; to strengthen the feeling of community, promoting physical and intellectual safety for oneself and others, and intercultural dialogue; to facilitate integration and a sense of belonging, allowing everybody to actively become a member of society rather than visitors. The library is definitely a multimedia and multicultural place, a shared space for our “guests,” the children, for whom the library always strives to evolve intellectually, socially, and technologically. Its motto is “tell me and I forget; show me and I remember; include me and I learn.”

The presence of several multimedia installations makes the Teste Fiorite project unique and original. In particular, a mobile app game set in 17-century Brindisi with pirate landings and treasure hunts also allows players to discover details of the Brindisi monuments while having fun. The CETMA group, in collaboration with the Public Archdiocesan Library “A. De Leo,” has developed a game for smartphones and tablets where players can explore the city of Brindisi by solving clues through rhymes.

A holographic projection welcomes visitors, telling the story of the first book printed in Brindisi. Inside the library there is a Virtual Library platform, which is an interactive multimedia system with high-definition visualization that allows for the virtual consultation of unpublished images and photos of Brindisi. Without the need for any handheld devices, visitors can use a tracking system to virtually select multimedia content simply by gesturing with their hand, allowing them to browse the content in the air. These multimedia contents are displayed on a high-brightness and high-definition wall-mounted TV monitor.

Finally, there are two interactive games for fun and learning: a puzzle and a memory game. Inside the spaces, on a wall with the help of a projector and VR software, visitors can interact through “leap motion” to learn while having fun.
